I didn't do film studies for very long. I never 'get' historical film references and I rarely recognise technical brilliance in cinimetography. But one thing I've always loved and recognised is a long tracking shot. That's one of the reasons I like this clip from Perth's Felicity Groom.
I like long shots because they require strategic direction, coreography, planning, ambition on skill. I appreciate those things. This film clip has no cuts, no edits, its just Felicity lookimg beautiful in white, dancing and singing around a playground with some dorky, indie friends whove dressed brightly in contrast. It's great.
Flick Groom's songs are finely crafted but not "immediate". I've always dug that it takes a little while for me to appreciate her songs. They'll never set radio-world alight but they'll blast out of my ipod speakers for much of the coming summer. Finders & Keepers brings to mind Kyu, with its thumping toms and its multitracked/group vocals. It doesn't pack the rock punch of some of her f*cking awesome "39 Ways To Leave Your Lover" but the heart of it is a fine, simple and surging song with Flicks distinctive voice front a centre. It's an ear worm.
I've not seen her live, but I'll leave it to one eloquent comment on YouTube to sum it up:
"Just saw these lads at the Tame Impala gig at Tivoli last night. Blew me the fuck away. All morning it's been "EY-EYEYEYYYYYY-EYEYEYEYYYYY" :D"
