Scott Spark
Three's Company Tour | 2011-05-02 03:51 | Written By: by AIR
Scott Spark had a big year in 2010, launching his debut album 'Fail Like You Mean It' and touring the country extensively... Despite the shows and the album receiving a host of good reviews and stacks of media coverage, we kinda feel like the album remains underrated. It's a gem.
Scott is the kind of artist we love at AIR. The sweet introduction on the home page of his (beautiful) website shows just how much passion, time, heart and soul goes into the making of his music.
There's a bunch of songs I've been wanting to share with you. Songs about outsmarting death, odes to dossing, impulsive love, shortcomings, losing your dog, and wanderlust at Christmastime.
I Spent the better part of two years recording them with around 20 friends, with everything mixed by the wonderous Tucker Martine (Laura Veirs, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, Death Cab For Cutie) in Porland, Oregan.
We rather enjoy the eloquence and humour of Scott's writing (and twittering)... so we asked if he wanted to contribute to our blog...
==============================================
I've nearly always written songs alone, which is why I got off on working with so many friends when I made my debut album, Fail Like You Mean It (also, check-out a few videos we made). At times, the studio was somewhere between a kibbutz and harem, with Tucker Martine pulling it into shape in Portland. I think music gives you more when you're playful with it - especially when you let others throw the bone too.
Even as a listener, two of my favourite releases in the past couple of years feature a bunch of unlikely collaborations: namely, Dark Was The Night (an indie compilation to raise fund for AIDS/HIV awareness and treatment), and Here Lies Love (life stories of Imelda Marcos, music written by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, with a stack of sensational vocalists). Sometimes these partnerships don't always hit the mark - and that's part of the fun.
Something I've wanted to do for a while is team up with a Melbourne and Sydney artist, and dart between our three cities over three nights. That's what the Three's Company tour with The Rescue Ships (Elana Stone, Brian Campeau) and Tash Parker is all about. I've been writing plenty of new songs - we'd love you to join us at one of the shows. It's $12 at the door, and if you prebook ($10+bf), you'll go in the running for a prize pack of Other Tongues releases.
